Thoughts on Being an Independent Artist

I started this journey five years ago, and after the events of 2020 and 2021, I feel confident welcoming many of you to this exciting—and sometimes frightening—road. If I had to choose a few keywords to describe my experience as a creator, I would choose independence, survival, struggle, and satisfaction. But if your keyword is money, well, I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. :) Since I started this journey, I don't think there's ever been a year that I've earned as much as I would have in my soul-crushing office jobs in the UK. Yet, the independence and satisfaction of making it with my talent makes it more than worth it.

It's constant work (what's a weekend anyway?). You have to be an artist, businessman, social media manager, accountant, public relations expert, web developer, etc. — and that's just an average Monday. Yet, if you can reach a point of relative stability and maybe even hire your first employee (I wish!), I believe it's a much better life than offices and cubicles.

I understand that many people don't want to take risks. They prefer the safety of a fixed income, but I think of this as my newest adventure. It might end, and I might have to be an employee again, but that wouldn't be a failure. It would just be the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. I really don't want to, though. So, I don't know... Is this the right place to say, "Please buy my maps"? :)
