Our Maps in Museums and Exhibitions Around the World

Over the years, our river basin maps have travelled far beyond our screens, appearing in museums, cultural institutions, and festivals across three continents. Here are some of the highlights.

Water Frontiers: Montreal Biosphere, Canada (2019)

The Montreal Biosphere is one of Canada's most iconic environmental museums, housed in Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome on Île Sainte-Hélène. For the Water Frontiers exhibition in 2019, we created a custom river basin map of North America, printed as a floor decal 12 metres wide. It remains one of the most impressive formats our maps have ever appeared in.

Biennale di Pisa: Pisa, Italy (2019) & La Biennale dello Stretto: Messina, Italy (2022)

Our Global and Mediterranean river basin maps have featured in two Italian art biennales, both curated by architect Alfonso Femia as part of his Invisible Mediterranean(s) cultural project. The first was the TEMPODACQUA project at the Biennale di Pisa in 2019; the second was La Biennale dello Stretto in December 2022, held at the historic Siacci Batteria Fort in the Messina Strait. Nous, les Fleuves: Musée des Confluences in Lyon, France (2022–2023)

The Nous, les Fleuves (We, the Rivers) exhibition at the Musée des Confluences was perhaps the most personal of all our exhibition placements. Our river basin map of the world was printed on fabric at approximately 6 by 4 metres, one of the largest prints we have ever made, and displayed as the centrepiece of the section on confluences, alongside a sculpted 3D terrain model by Sylvestre Bénard. Seeing visitors stand in front of it, pointing and telling stories, was a moment we will not forget. Read more about the exhibition.

RiverRun Festival: The Kennedy Center, Washington DC, USA (2023)

Our river basin map of the world was displayed as a 10 by 18 foot banner at the RiverRun Festival, organised by The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The festival celebrated rivers as living systems: cultural, ecological, and deeply human, making our map a natural fit for the occasion. Read more about the festival.
