Urban metamorphosis: a highly successful project by a Hungarian NGO

The importance of bees and other pollinators in nature is (hopefully!) not news to anyone these days. Bees, bumblebees, butterflies and small flies help to keep the ecological balance and biodiversity in nature. Without these important insects the crops we consume would disappear, as well as most wild plants that are essential for all kinds of animals on the planet. The declining number of pollinators is an issue we all need to be aware of.⠀
Painting their vast mural in June was the last stage of Mondolo's 2021 project called "Operation Pollinator", that helped people understand the problem more. Starting in January, they created ten urban wildflower meadows and put up bee hotels all over town to help pollinators find food and shelter. At these locations informational sings with QR codes give further guidance. With the help of Syngenta they gave away packets of wildflower seeds to the public and are planning to have more campaigns like that in the future.

Having your own wildflower garden or insect hotel is a small but very important step in saving the bees - and ourselves. Even a flower pot in your balcony helps. Together with other plants we have a big crate full of sweet alyssum on our balcony that proved to be a hit among bumblebees :)
