Articles about our work
Not long after Robert's river maps were first discovered by the good people of the internet back in 2016, journalists started to flood in as well. One of the first articles was published by the Mail Online, featuring only the river map of the contiguous USA, still referring to Robert by his Imgur username. A few months later they asked him for an interview which resulted in a longer and a more thorough article. IFLScience was also among the first magazines that wrote about the river maps. Robert, being a geography nerd himself, was never surprised to see that geeky science blogs and papers found his work interesting. Amongst others they appeared on the pages of Gizmodo, twice on GearJunkie, and BigThink. Digg and Yahoo found the first set of maps newsworthy, too.
It is a really good feeling being recognized by the art you make. Reading about his own work on the pages of The Washington Post, CNN or the Atlas Obscura is something that he has never dreamed of. He was even interviewed by The Smithsonian! In 2019 BBC Sounds recorded an interview where he talks about map making and the story of Grasshopper Geography. Listen from 36:30.
The list has been growing ever since, and with the recent publication of the world's first detailed ocean drainage basin maps even the Smithsonian reached out to ask for a new interview.
Below you can find a selection of the articles we have gathered throughout the years, updated with some of the latest features.
