My name is Robert and I'm a GIS Analyst/Digital Cartographer from Hungary. This is the story of how I became an artist by accident.
It all started in 2014. After a couple of uninspiring office jobs all around England, I decided that I could spend my time more productively. Generating even more profit for multinationals and people seven steps up the ladder whom I'd never met? Sure thing. So I took a deep breath and chose to spend my time and money volunteering my mapmaking skills to NGOs instead. I started alternating between money-saving stints in England and two- to six-month volunteering positions around the world.
I've worked with archaeologists on the tiny Caribbean island of St Eustatius, with marine biologists in Alaska and in an orangutan conservation programme in Indonesian Borneo, amongst others. These trips helped me to grow both personally and professionally while supporting causes that matter.
My next great adventure was setting up Grasshopper Geography, which grew from some hobby projects and maps that I shared online. When the internet community started asking where they could buy my work and seemed to genuinely like it, I was surprised and overwhelmed. I also realised that this could be my chance to make a living from my passion: creating artistic maps for everyone to enjoy. So here we are!
At the end of 2020, Eszter, my life partner, also became my business partner. Since then, we have both been working full-time to bring you fresh, colourful, eye-opening, scientifically accurate maps of the highest possible quality. Although it was a long time ago, I hope that, in the not-so-distant future, I (or even better, we) will be able to volunteer for new NGOs around the world again.
